Why I Dry Brush Daily
I first learned about dry scrubbing when years ago I read Perfect Health by Deepak Chopra. I was rearranging my lifestyle to incorporate Auyervedic approaches while trying desperately to get pregnant with my first. I fell addicted to performing ‘Garshana’, craving the rough sensation on my skin daily.
The main benefit to dry brushing?
The coarse bristles applied to dry skin before the shower, exfoliates and removes dead skin to improve the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins through the pores offering lymphatic support. The technique also reduces cellulite, increases blood circulation which will leave your skin looking radiant, and people feel invigorated and energized afterwards. I choose to add a few drops of doTERRA Cypress to support the movement of stagnant energy, encouraging fluidity and flexibility in the heart and mind from past experience.
How to perform? (As per book Perfect Health, p.133)
Use your fingertips initially to massage the scalp in brink circular motions. Now take your brush and stoke the sides of your neck towards your shoulders in a ‘lengthwise’ motion. Shoulders ‘circular’ motion. Down the arms ‘lengthwise’. Elbows ‘circular’. Forearms ‘lengthwise’. Wrists ‘circular’. Move to your stomach and brush ‘circular’ in a clockwise rotation. Brush ‘lengthwise’ up and down your sternum, then let the direction of the brush move slightly laterally towards the collarbones along the upper chest. Forming a ‘Y’ shape with your sternum. Continue down the body, ‘circular’ rotation on your buttocks. Thighs ‘lengthwise’. Knees ‘circular’. calves and shin ’lengthwise’. Ankles ‘circular’. Top and bottom of the feet ‘lengthwise’. Lastly take the brush to your spine and brush up and down the spine, lower back (excellent for the kidneys) and showlderblades.
